Martyrs’ Day is celebrated in India on 30th January, it is the day when Mahatma Gandhi was killed in an assassination by Nathuram Godse in 1948. Gandhi played one of the most important roles in India’s freedom struggle against British rule, which resulted in India getting freedom on 15th August 1947.
Nathuram Godse shot Mahatma Gandhi at the Birla House Compound in New Delhi, Godse had opposed Gandhi’s views on the partition of India which happened along with Independence creating Pakistan. On Martyrs’ Day, India’s President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Defence Minister and the three service chiefs of Indian Armed Forces assemble at the Samadhi Sthal of Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat in New Delhi, laying wreaths there. In the honour of all the Indian martyrs a two-minute silence is observed at 11 am across the country.
